Wishin, and Hopin and Thinkin and Prayin…we can wish all day, but just because we want something doesn’t mean we deserve it or will even get it.Do you remember being a child and wishing for something for your birthday? Did those wishes always come true?? Probably not. If they did, you know there was a hard working Mama or Papa behind making those wishes come true for you.
In today’s generation, I do see a larger sense of entitlement – believing that we deserve things even when we don’t work for them. This leads to much disappointment and a feeling of being cheated, which doesn’t help anyone.
I once had an intern work for me who expected that he could show up (whenever he felt like getting out of bed) and just “punch his time card” to complete his internship. Little did he know that he chose to work for someone who expected MUCH more. I sat down with him and laid out my expectations of him being punctual for work and completing a specific list of tasks each day. I would reward him for the hours he was ACTUALLY working and not for the ones that he decided he needed a break or put his social/phone life ahead of his work. He got what he worked for….not much.
Instead of expecting opportunities to be delivered to you, we need to realize that it’s a more competitive market than that – There is always someone who is willing to work harder and push further than you to get an opportunity. Be that person who can work harder and push further than others. Give ALL your effort and attention to becoming the best version of yourself, prepared to take on any challenge.
Trust me…you’ll get what you work for.
