Two ways to spread your light — you can either be a candle or a mirror to reflect what you admire in others. I believe we’re a mix of both. We shape ourselves to be who we want to be and we reflect the positive influences around us.
When in a job or career, it is helpful to be both a candle and a mirror. As a candle, you can shine light on creative and innovative ideas that you have to better the company or the team. You can be a leader by your actions and a role model to your co-workers. You can be the person that is always looking for ways to improve, taking initiative to keep your day busy and productive, and in doing so, shine your light among others that they might reflect your work ethic.
Sometimes, we don’t know where to start. A new job or position might be intimidating and can feel like you’re the only candle in a sea of darkness. This is when you can use your mirror to reflect those that have held this position before you, or those who supervise you.
Reflect all the positive things you see your supervisor doing. Reflect the initiatives that are being taken. Reflect the way things are run and then start to brighten your own light once you’re comfortable.
Rarely in business do you stand alone to light the darkness. Even in self-employment, there are others who have been successful before you. The same thing goes for interviewing. Read and research on how to be successful in an interview. Study the common threads that seem to appear in most traditional interviews. Reflect success and then begin your own light.
